Hello, Im new to the group (thank you Dan), and thought Id take a moment to introduce myself. Im a retired engineer who literally “bought the farm”. Most of my friends think Im nuts and theyre probably right. Anyway, having a great time (wishing you were here on the Oregon Coast). Our winters are fairly mild, temperature wise, but we have significant moisture/humidity problems in our hives. Ventilated bottom boards seem to be the norm. Im using insulated inner covers to try to minimize condensation at the top of the hives. Im new to beekeeping. I have to say that its frustrating that the most uncertainty concerning the health of a hive (honey reserves, temperature and condensation) occur at a time when its least desirable to go into a hive. Im developing a hive monitoring system to help me monitor my hives. The heart of the system is a computer and radio transmitter that fits inside the top bar of a frame. Im using Langstroth hives. The entire unit, including battery, is sealed within the frame. My expectation is that I will get 3 to 5 years operation out of one battery. Other parts of the system include a recording unit outside the hives, a weight sensor to measure honey accumulation and consumption, and a tilt sensor to detect upset of the hive from predators. Im interested in any thoughts, concerns, suggestions. I have one concern regarding the placement of a radio transmitter inside a hive. There has been some research in this area, but nothing definitive. Comments are always welcome. My Facebook page is Bee Certain and my website is bee-certain Thanks for reading this, Bob
