Hello JCamp staff and campers past and present! Ill try to keep this brief :) I’m Janie, a rising senior at Princeton High School in Princeton, NJ, and I am in Ms. Cari Hernandez’s broadcast team for JCamp. My love for broadcast began at the ripe old age of seven years old when, having eagerly watched the Today show every morning, I decided that I wanted to become a news anchorwoman when I grew up. At the time, I did not really understand what journalism was and thought of it as glamorous field in which all job descriptions included traveling to incredible sites and getting to meet influential members of society. I dreamed of working at NBC and sitting at the desk with Meredith Vieira, Katie Couric, Brian Williams, and the like (who are still my idols today). Since then, I have become more aware of and exposed to the grittier, less glamorous side of journalism, though this reality has only made me become more passionate about it! I jumped at the chance to become an anchor for my middle school’s daily homeroom broadcast and helped start the school’s first newspaper in eighth grade. In high school, I wanted to explore the more investigative side of journalism with print and have become involved in our award-winning newspaper freshman year. I have been writing for News and Features from the very beginning and am currently the section editor. I absolutely love the thrill of investigating and reporting stories in my community, especially controversial ones that provoke lots of discussion both in the reporting process and after they have been published. Writing for the newspaper has allowed me to meet some incredible people through our awesome staff and also through interviewees, another aspect that I love about journalism and am really looking forward to at JCamp! Walking through NYC yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised when I came across Al Jazeera’s office on W 34th and of course had to stop for a picture :) I can’t wait to meet Ms. Chen and the rest of the amazing guest speakers, as well as all of the campers in less than 48 hours!!
