Hello June! I’m declaring this The Month of Words for my little corner of the universe. For myself, for my kids and for my camp kids. Loads of reading, lots of writing. We will be immersed in words and through that immersion we will grow. I’ve been slack about my own reading lately because when I’m sitting nursing Baby Bird, I find it much more convenient to mindlessly flick through Pinterest on my phone. During the coming month, I intend to read: Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert and Love Life by Rob Lowe. As for my writing, I hope to be regular on this page and get a few other writing assignments out of the way. For Beta and Beti, what with me being unwell, Birdy being refluxy, Hums unexpected visit, our night time storytime fell off the bandwagon. Before I knew it a whole two weeks had passed and I hadn’t read a single word to them. I started again three days ago. On the first day, they were all “noooo, no reading, I’m playing, noooo” which was of course so heartbreaking for me. Here I have been so particular for the past few years and it took just two weeks for them to fall out of habit. Talk about discouraging! But we somehow made it through a couple of books, whining and all. The next night was a little easier. And by the third time, they were once again the ones excitedly gathering the books we would read that night. I had been feeling disconnected from the kids and I think they from me…a few nights of reading together established that sought after connection again. Its always a reminder to me that I really MUST stay particular about this habit. Camp kids will be hearing lots of great storybooks from me as well doing some reading of their own. I’ve added a few great titles to my collection recently and can’t wait to share them with the happy campers. And every day, we’ll be working on some idea or the other within the craft of writing. I’ll try my very bestest to post whatever we do up here on the page as well so that those who couldn’t attend can get ideas for creative writing activities they can try with their little people at home. I think it was Dumbledore who said “words are our most inexhaustible form of magic”, and I believe that wholeheartedly. Words, in both reading and writing, have saved me, have lifted me and have taught me. They really are the most magical element of my life and I’m so glad I have the opportunity to share them with my family, my friends, my campers and my readers. Tell me: - What is on your summer reading list? - Which one book are you planning to read to the kids?
