Hello Mr. Jones! I am a sophomore at Michigan State University - TopicsExpress

Hello Mr. Jones! I am a sophomore at Michigan State University currently enrolled in a Geology of Michigan class. We have learned about some very thought provoking issues pertaining to our states natural resources so far in class. In order to fulfill my requirement in the Honors College, I am surveying the candidates for the 2014 Senate seat about said issues. If you could, respond considering how you would use your position as U.S. Senator to address these topics. If it is at all possible, please respond as early as possible, as I must submit the composite of representative responses before Election Day on November 4th. I am eager to hear what you plan to do for Michigan in the U.S. Senate. My questions are as follows, please respond to as many as possible. Thank you! A controversial topic in the news lately, fracking is an important issue for many residents of the Lower Peninsula, especially the Northern Portion. What are your policies for land and mineral leases, and specifically the disposal of the chemical composition of fracking fluid and the overall effects on the surrounding ecosystem? A continuing growth of population in Southeast Michigan coupled with a high concentration of arsenic in the groundwater is cause for concern. Levels of groundwater in the Saginaw Bay area are especially high, almost not potable. What are your policies on maintaining a safe and clean water to supply to Michigan Residents? Michigans Great Lakes are among its most important resource and a defining trait of our economy and culture. What policies do you have to curb the growth of current and potential invasive species in Michigans Great Lakes including but not limited to Asian carp becoming a more realistic threat? Continuing, what are your plans to help curb pollution in the Great Lakes? For instance, levels of synthetic fertilizer byproduct, known as PCBs, from point source industrial dumping that were higher than the legal limit approved by the FDA were consistently found in fish in the Great Lakes (Hickey et al 2005). Finally, what is your position on the commercial use and sale of Great Lakes water to other states not bordering the lakes? Other countries?
