Hello. My name is Michael Porcelli and Im a sugaraholic. Some of you might laugh at this line. Im not being sarcastic when I say I had a severe sugar problem for most of my life. No candy was safe with me in the room. Bread, pasta, cakes, pastries, cookies, you name it and I ate it. With a big smile on my face. If it wasnt for my love of exercise and my years of competition there is no telling how bad things would have worked out for me. The reality is it is easy to fall into the sugar trap. This is not a me problem, this is a world problem. On this day in America, a tremendous amount of people will be shoving candy and sweets down kids throats. Nutrition is a failed science in our society. I can remember the school nurse screaming at the top of her lungs as to how unhealthy our wrestlers looked. Lean (thin), taut (sucked in cheeks), and focused (irritable) is what our wrestlers were really feeling (see words in parenthesis for other peoples views). Yet, the people on the outside of the program described the wrestlers in mean terms. In essence, we were living a life everyone should live. Stay hungry, both physically and mentally, is a healthy choice. We dont need to eat five to six meals a day. We do not need high carbohydrate diets that force an insulin response and decrease our bodies functioning. We surely do not need the sweets and junk weve eaten for years. Now, during wrestling season, I ate healthy. Kept my caloric intake to a minimum and made great food choices (lean meats, green, leafy vegetables, little fat, and no sugar). Once the season was over, it was back to the All American diet: if it tastes good then eat it. This yo-yo effect was detrimental to my health. Its detrimental to your health, as well. It is as if we pacify ourselves with food. There must be a change in mentality and approach to nutrition. At home, school, and work, we must all take an approach that food is fuel and if that food provides little to no energy then do not eat it! In my later years, as my metabolism slows down and the competitions waned, I had to address my nutrition. At first, it was very difficult. Old habits are hard to break. But, there must be some sense and sensibility to what WE place in our bodies. Unless you are being held against your will and are forced to it junk you have the ability to make good choices. That includes Halloween. Dont tell me that ONE piece of candy will not hurt you. It will. Dont tell me that youll start tomorrow or its just one day. Its your body. We need to be stronger and smarter. Learn from your nutritional mistakes. You do not have to be a victim. Happy Halloween!
