Hello Old Ledbury! The attached picture is a 1914-18 British War Medal awarded to a Ledbury man who although not a combatant, still did his bit for King and Country. The medal is impressed around the rim REV. H.A BARNES and was awarded to Reverend Henry Albert Barnes who preached at the Congregational Chapel in the High Street. I have him listed in Tilleys Almanack of 1916 as preaching there with the attendant Mrs WHEALE. Rev Barnes was born in Islington, London about 1876 and is listed as an Independent Minister at Ledbury on the 1911 Census. He lived in Bank Crescent at this time. During the latter half of WW1 he joined the Young Mens Christian Association and served in the Army as a Forces Chaplain. He was stationed in France where he provided both spiritual and physical comfort to wounded soldiers. I would be most interested in being able to put a face to Rev Barnes. I believe he died in December 1958 at Portsmouth, Hamps.
