Hello again, This is a bit of a followup to my post a couple of weeks ago. I would love to hear from any experts regarding deployment of radials for a shortened vertical. To summarize: - I am planning to try a 43 or less vertical wire antenna, with a base coil to tune/load it for 3.5-3.55MHz. I will use a 4:1 balun, RG-58 (probably) and a shack tuner at my TS-870 as well. - I can only put radials over 90 degrees of the circle around the antenna. - The radials can be up to approx 50 feet, one or two could go as much as 80 feet or so if necessary. - The base of the antenna will be about 6 feet above the majority of the yard (see attached video). - I have to get around a patio about 4 feet from the base of the antenna and about 6 feet below it. - See video please. - The radials: 1. I am thinking the best design is to run the radials as normal, but when they reach the edge of the patio, run them around it fully and then continue on in the same line on the other side of the patio. Most radials will therefore make U pattern around the patio, or more like an Omega/Ohm sign I suppose. 2. Alternatively, I could run a number of four foot radials and then separately run a series of longer radials in a bunch that go around the patio and then extend into the yard in the same pattern as would happen if the patio wasnt there (like #1, but with the short radials as well). 3. I could put two radials along the fence which would mean they would be roughly the same height as the base of the antenna, but running about 6 feet above the ground. Questions: 1. I believe there is no point in having any radial longer than the height of the wire antenna, yes? 2. Should I bunch all radials together as they go around the patio, or run a few radials around the patio (say 2 or 4) and then attach multiple radials that fan out from those as if they were following a line from the base of the antenna? 3. If radials are close together as they go around the patio, does this create a possibility of them cancelling each other out, thereby diminishing the effectiveness? If so, any suggestions? Twist them? Move them apart as much as possible? 4. Does making a few of the radials raised per #3 above make things better or worse? Thanks for reading/watching. 73, Adrian VE7NZ
