Hello all. As most of you know I am the director at the Souris Valley Animal Shelter. I have seen a few posts here that worry me about public opinion concerning the shelter. I would like to address a few of the more popular posts I have seen. First, I am retired military so I can promise you there is NO prejudice against military members. Some people simply do not give good applications and therefore, in good conscience, we cannot adopt pets to them. This rule is applied to ALL members of our community not a select few. Second, we are a LOW kill shelter. This means that we euthanize based on behavioral or medical issues. The main reason we are over crowded at the moment is due to that fact. We WILL NOT euthanize an adoptable pet. A pet will only be put to sleep after all efforts were given to ensure he/she was given a fighting chance at adoption. As for the adoption process, I have made changes to our adoption procedures to ensure potential adopters only have a short waiting period before finding out if they have been approved. I would love to give everyone who walks into our shelter a pet but as I mentioned earlier I cannot. Lastly, the Souris Valley Animal Shelter staff take there jobs very seriously and do so without any prejudice or bias against anyone. If your application is denied feel free to ask why. Odds are its something minor that you can change (reference didnt call us back, landlord approval, and so on). Our job is to find a pet a home that we feel will house them for the rest of that pets life and offer them a good quality of life. I am open to all forms of communication if you have concerns so feel free to call me at 852-6133, e-mail me at svaspets@srt or stop by the shelter and ask for me. I would love to discuss your concerns.
