Hello all. For some, enrolment begins tomorrow, which means its time to cover some frequently asked questions that pop up around this time of year. This is a long post, but bear with me. * Ill be closing the group at 11:59pm tonight (July 13), meaning that only members of the group can see posts. The reason for this mainly lies with privacy. Ive received some messages from students who do not feel comfortable posting a question on the wall, or they dont want non-members to see. This will only be enhanced when you guys will be posting your schedules - I dont think the whole world will want to see your final schedules, as this is currently an open group. Same goes for residence - I dont think you guys want the whole world to see where you live; there can be some privacy risks there. It also will minimize spambots and trolls. 1. DO I ENROL IN FALL AND WINTER COURSES NOW? Yes. Enrol in the fall term first, then the winter term after. If you have your classes in your shopping cart, it should make this a very quick process. 2. SOLUS WILL NOT VALIDATE A COURSE I WANT TO TAKE. I AM TAKING THE PREREQUISITE IN THE FIRST TERM. Well, SOLUS assumes you will pass the prerequisite course. This is a common problem that will come up for BIOL 102/103. Put both in your shopping cart for the respective terms, enrol in the fall, then enrol in the winter term. 3. WHEN DO I PAY TUITION? Tuition fees will appear eventually after your enrolment. Tuition is due in full on September 1st, provided that you are not receiving OSAP, or your OSAP amount is negligible compared to your tuition costs. If you are receiving OSAP, itll be best to contact the Financial Aid Office to see what can be done - deferring tuition until a later date is an option. 4. DO I HAVE TO BE IN THE SAME SECTION IN BOTH TERMS? For a full-year course, yes. SOLUS will likely not let you enrol if you are in a different section. For example, if you are enrolling in POLS 110 A/B, if you choose lecture section #002 and tutorial section #017 in the A-section, you must choose the same two tutorials in the second term. 5. MY ENROLMENT DATE IS ON THE 15TH. WILL MY COURSES BE FULL? Probably not. The 15th is the second day of enrolment (with tomorrow being the first day of enrolment). Always have fallbacks in place in case anything fills up. 6. HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR FROSH WEEK? University Orientation, formerly known as res orientation, will take place the first three days youre at Queens - including move-in day. If you are in residence, you are automatically enrolled in University Orientation. If you are not in residence, you can sign up for First Year Not In Residence (FYNIRs) orientation week, in lieu of university orientation. Faculty orientation runs the next four days - check the pinned post at the top of the group wall to see links to faculty-specific groups and registration information. 7. WHEN DO I FIND OUT ABOUT RESIDENCE? Itll be later than usual this year. No one is really sure why. Res assignments will be announced around the 21st of August, so hang tight. 8. IS MY SCHEDULE OK? The person who knows your habits the best is yourself. We can help you to point out if youve missed a tutorial somewhere, or youre planning out too much/not enough/ineligible courses, but we do not know your study habits. Are you a morning person? Are you an evening person? Do you go to the gym a lot? Do you like big breaks? Do you like consecutive classes? Do you like long or short meal times? Do I want a balanced schedule? Do I want more classes on one day, and less - or none - on another? Do I work better in the morning or the evening? Do I even? Ask yourself these questions and more when planning out and scheduling your courses. Its your schedule, you can do what you want to - within the means of enrolment, prerequisites, restrictions, and please dont plan out a law course in first year. 8. I PICKED ARGENTINA TO WIN THE WORLD CUP. WHAT DO I DO NOW? Netflix and pizza solves all. Also follow @jonwiseman on Twitter. 9. I DO NOT SEE MY QUESTION HERE. WHAT DO I DO? Post it below as a comment, or post it on the wall.
