Happy feast day to all named Simon and parents of all named Simon Happy feast day to all Catholic Missionaries Happy feast day to all martyrs Today (October 28) also marks the feast of Saint Simon the Zealot He is referred to as the apostle called Simon Zelotes, He is often called “Simon the Zealot”, as in the gospel of Luke 6:15 and Acts of the Apostles 1:13 He can also be called Saint Simon Kananaios or Saint Simon Cananeus Simon signifies hearkening or listening, Saint Simon was one of the most obscure among the apostles of Jesus In the Gospel of Luke (Christ names His Apostles): “Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, and “Judas the brother of James”, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. (Luke 6:14-16) To distinguish him from Simon Peter, he is called Kananaios, or Kananites (Matthew 10:4; Mark 3:18), and in the list of apostles in Luke 6:15, repeated in Acts 1:13, Zelotes, the Zealot. In later tradition, Simon is often associated with Saint Jude as an evangelizing team; they share their feast day on 28 October. The most widespread tradition is that after evangelizing in Egypt, Simon joined Jude in Persia and Armenia, where both were martyred. This version is the one found in the Golden Legend. One tradition states that he traveled in the Middle East and Africa. Christian Ethiopians claim that he was crucified in Samaria In art, Simon has the identifying attribute of a saw because according to legend, he was put to death by a saw. Saint Simon, like the other Apostles, is regarded as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church Saint Simon is the Patron Saint of curriers He is also the Patron Saint of sawmen and sawyers He is the Patron Saint of tanners ----------------------------------------- Prayer to Saint Simon the Apostle: O Glorious Saint Simon, you were an apostle of Jesus and a devoted follower as well. You were called the Zealot, indicating that you were willing to give your life for your religion and your freedom as a human person. Obtain for us the grace to be willing to give our lives for Christ and to labor for the freedom and peace that only God can give. Help us to spend ourselves for God on earth and be received by him in eternal bliss in heaven. Amen. --------------------------------------- Reflection: All of the Apostles except for John the Beloved were physically martyred for the sake of the Gospel. It brings to mind Jesus words to the Apostles, and essentially to all Christians: “Do not forget what I said to you, No servant can be greater than his master. They will persecute you just as they have persecuted me; they will pay the same attention to your words as to mine. And they will treat you thus because you bear my name; they have no knowledge of Him who sent me.” -(John 15:20-21) Let us pray (Oremus): God our Father, you revealed yourself to us through the preaching of your apostles Simon and Jude. By their prayers, give your Church continued growth and increase the number of those who believe in you. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen -------------------------------------------- Let us pray that by the works, spiritual direction, spiritual maturity, intercession and martyrdom of Saint Simon the Zealot, we may in this group find the spiritual motivation to win our souls for God. Amen Summary of the life history, works and martyrdom of Saint Simon the Zealot can be viewed by clicking the photo of the Martyr in our groups photo section. Saint of the day, would be communicated to you as promptly and consistently as humanly possible, by Gods grace. May we all in this group and beyond this group, Christians and non Christians alike, Catholics and non Catholics alike, be saved from the fires of hell and lifted up into heaven after our stay here on this exile. Amen May our Lord Jesus Christ, through the intercession of Saint Simon the Zealot and all other Saints and Martyrs before and after him, through Gods Divine Mercy strengthen our souls, open out the way for us all, and above all, intoxicate us with HIS love. Amen May Christ make us into blazing fires to enkindle the earth with the heavenly fire HE brought us. Amen Jesus we love you, all we have is yours, yours we are and yours we want to be, please do with us whatever you will. Amen Jesus, Mary we love you, please save our souls. Amen God bless you and grant your heart’s desire. Amen Saint Simon the Zealot, pray for us. Amen
