It is believed by Catholics that Jesus Christ revealed the Devotion to His Sacred Heart (the Nine First Fridays and the Holy Hour) during his apparitions to her. Margaret was healed from a crippling disorder by a vision of the Blessed Virgin This miracle prompted her to give her life to God. After a girlhood marked by painful illness and even more painful family discord, Margaret Mary Alacoque entered the Visitation convent of Paray-le-Monial, France, at the age of 22. She was ignorant, sickly, and clumsy, but she had great charity and humility. Our Lord chose her to spread devotion to his Sacred Heart, at a time when rebellion without (Protestantism) and heresy within (Jansenism) were doing their best to separate Catholics from their faith and their God. After receiving a vision of Christ fresh from the Scourging, she was moved to join the Order of the Visitation at Paray-le-Monial in 1671. Catholic Tradition informs us that Margaret Mary received a revelation from our Lord in 1675, which included 12 promises to her and to those who practiced a true to devotion to His Sacred Heart, whose crown of thorns represent his sacrifices. This devotion encountered violent opposition, especially in Jansenist areas, but the devotion as become widespread and popular. In art, she is represented as a woman wearing the habit of the Order of the Visitation and holding a flaming heart; woman wearing the habit of the Order of the Visitation and kneeling before Jesus who exposes His heart to her -------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote of the Day (words of Saint Margaret Mary) What a weakness it is to love Jesus Christ only when He caresses us, and to be cold immediately once He afflicts us. This is not true love. Those who love thus, love themselves too much to love God with all their heart. -Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Twelve Promises of Jesus to Saint Margaret Mary for those devoted to His Sacred Heart: 1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life. 2. I will establish peace in their families. 3. I will console them in all their troubles. 4. They shall find in My Heart an assured refuge during life and especially at the hour of their death. 5. I will pour abundant blessings on all their undertakings. 6. Sinners shall find in My Heart the source of an infinite ocean of mercy. 7. Tepid souls shall become fervent. 8. Fervent souls shall speedily rise to great perfection. 9. I will bless the homes where an image of My Heart shall be exposed and honored. 10. I will give to priests the power of touching the most hardened hearts. 11. Those who propagate this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be effaced. 12. The all-powerful love of My Heart will grant to all those who shall receive Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months the grace of final repentance; they shall not die under my displeasure, nor without receiving their Sacraments; My heart shall be their assured refuge at that last hour. -from Saint Margaret Mary Alacoques vision of Jesus -------------------------------------------------------------------- Look at this Heart which has loved men so much, and yet men do not want to love Me in return. Through you My divine Heart wishes to spread its love everywhere on earth. -from Saint Margaret Mary Alacoques vision of Jesus -------------------------------------------------------------------- The sacred heart of Christ is an inexhaustible fountain and its sole desire is to pour itself out into the hearts of the humble so as to free them and prepare them to lead lives according to his good pleasure. From this divine heart three streams flow endlessly. •The first is the stream of mercy for sinners; it pours into their hearts sentiments of contrition and repentance. •The second is the stream of charity which helps all in need and especially aids those seeking perfection in order to find the means of surmounting their difficulties. •From the third stream flow love and light for the benefit of his friends who have attained perfection; these he wishes to unit to himself so that they may share his knowledge and commandments and, in their individual ways, devote themselves wholly to advancing his glory. This divine heart is an abyss filled with all blessings, and into the poor should submerge all their needs. It is an abyss of joy in which all of us can immerse our sorrows. It is an abyss of lowliness to counteract our foolishness, an abyss of mercy for the wretched, an abyss of love to meet our every need. Are you making no progress in prayer? Then you need only offer God the prayers which the Savior has poured out for us in the sacrament of the altar. Offer God his fervent love in reparation for your sluggishness. In the course of every activity pray as follows: My God, I do this or I endure that in the heart of your Son and according to his holy counsels. I offer it to you in reparation for anything blameworthy or imperfect in my actions. Amen Continue to do this in every circumstance of life. But above all preserve peace of heart. This is more valuable than any treasure. In order to preserve it there is nothing more useful than renouncing your own will and substituting for it the will of the divine heart. In this way his will can carry out for us whatever contributes to his glory, and we will be happy to be his subjects and to trust entirely in him. -from a letter by Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque The Nine Fridays must be made in honor of His Sacred Heart, meaning, practicing the devotion and having a great love of His Sacred Heart. They must be on the first Friday of the month for nine consecutive months, and Holy Communion must be received.) The Nine First Fridays With regard to this promise it may be remarked: 1.That our Lord required Holy Communion to be received on a particular day chosen by Him; 2.that the nine Fridays must be consecutive; 3.that they must be made in honor of His Sacred Heart, which means that those who make the nine Fridays must practice the devotion and must have a great love for our Lord; 4.that our Lord does not say that those who make the nine Fridays will be dispensed from any of their obligations or from exercising the vigilance necessary to lead a good life and overcome temptation; rather He implicitly promises abundant graces to those who make the nine Fridays to help them to carry out these obligations and persevere to the end; 5.that perseverance in receiving Holy Communion for nine consecutive First Firdays helps the faithful to acquire the habit of frequent Communion, which our Lord eagerly desires; 6.that the practice of the nine Fridays is very pleasing to our Lord since He promises such great reward, and that all Catholics should endeavor to make the nine Fridays. Saint Margaret Mary was rebuffed by her superior, Mother de Saumaise. However, in her efforts to follow the instruction she had received in the visions, she eventually won her over but was unable to convince a group of theologians of the validity of her apparitions, nor was she any more successful with many of the members of her community. Margaret Mary received the support of Blessed Claude de la Colombière, the communitys confessor for a time, who declared that the visions were genuine. In 1683, opposition in the community ended when Mother Melin was elected Superior and named Margaret Mary her assistant. In 1686 her convent celebrated the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the first time. In 1688, a chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart was constructed at Paray-le-Monial and soon the devotion began to spread, with the help of the Visitandine Nuns and the priests of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Only two years later, Margaret Mary died suddenly on October 17, 1690. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus spread throughout France In the year 1765, the devotion was officially approved by Pope Clement XIII (who was the 248th Pope of the Catholic Church since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle). Margaret Mary died on the 17th of October, 1690 Her body was found to be incorrupt! Catholic History confirms to us that her Heart and Brain are still incorrupt!! Her body rests under the altar in the chapel at Paray, and many striking favours have been obtained by pilgrims attracted from all parts of the world. Her incorrupt heart and brain have been preserved in a wax and metal figurine of her body and can be seen in the convent chapel of the Order of the Visitation at Paray, France. Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque was canonized and pronounced as Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV (who was the 258th Bishop of Rome and Head of the Catholic Church since the pontificate of Saint Peter the Apostle) ------------------------------------------------------------------- Let us pray (Oremus) Pour out on us, we pray, O Lord, the spirit with which you so remarkably endowed Saint Margaret Mary, so that we may come to know that love of Christ which surpasses all understanding and be utterly filled with your fullness.
