Hello all! There are definitely going to be some creative sparks flying this Wednesday 22nd January at The Lescar. Were very excited to feature a band led by saxophonist/composer James Mainwaring, who with Roller Trio was recently both a Mercury Prize nominee and MOBO prize winner. With the aid of an Emerging Excellence grant from the Musicians Benevolent Fund, James has brought together a band that features one of the great individualists of UK music and a great communicator, internationally reknowned improvising pianist Matthew Bourne. On bass are Mick Bardon and on drums Joost Hendrickx, combining razor sharp rhythmic precision with a high level of freedom, both fresh emerging talents on the UK jazz and improvised music scenes. Combined, their music will be full of idiosyncratic energy, with great grooves, cutting edge improvisation, and always engaging. James Mainwaring’s tenor saxophone is hands down the most impressive and challenging I’ve witnessed in the last few years Clive Paris Rozario (AAA Music) ‘Saxophonist James Mainwaring is a resourceful exponent of John Zornian squealings, growling split-note sounds and almost-romantic tenor rumination…’ John Fordham (Guardian) Beautiful tone Ivan Hewett (The Telegraph) ‘Awesome sax skronk skills” Lauren Laverne (Channel 4, BBC) As ever the music starts at 9pm, doors 8.30pm, and its just £5 to see these brilliant creative musicians. Please do come down and support us bringing the best in jazz and improvised music to Sheffield and The Lescar. Were extremely grateful to the PRS for Music Foundation and Jazz Services in helping us to fund this gig.
