Hello all! This Wednesday we will be treated to a linguistic anthropological tour de force brought to us with gusto by the wonderful Martina Volfova and Dr. Patricia Shaw! The talks will be from 11-12 in ANSO 134, and there will be snacks and coffee provided --- and feel free to bring some snacks or baking to contribute if you fancy! All are welcome, please spread the word to any interested students and colleagues. See the attached poster for more details. We are still looking for people interested in presenting. Remember, the talks can be as informal as you (just spend half an hour discussing your research with your peers) or as formal (dress up in a suit and tie and practice your upcoming conference presentation) as you like. Sign up in the ANSO grad lounge, or contact Ale, Madeline, or myself (Bryn). Talk information: “AND NOW WE ARE ALL NEWENEE”: A JOURNEY OF BECOMING AND KEEPING THE SHOSHONE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE ALIVE By Martina Volfová In this talk I give a brief overview of my ethnographic thesis project, which examined how Shoshone and Goshute youth involved in the University of Utah’s Shoshone/Goshute Youth Language Apprentice Program (SYLAP) experience language loss, negotiate the complexities of the world they live in, and innovatively contribute to the overall Shoshone language revitalization efforts. Carefully considering the political and social complexities the youth navigate daily, I argue that these innovations must be understood as skillful adaptation strategies that respond to the young people’s contemporary realities, while at the same time, building on the existing cultural norms and practices of Shoshone communities. In the process of participating in the SYLAP program, the youth not only improved their language skills, but also reshaped and deepened their sense of what it means to be a contemporary Shoshone person, creating a network of people to support and sustain their efforts of keeping the Shoshone language and culture alive. ENDANGERED LANGUAGES: THE NEXT GENERATION Dr. Patricia Shaw will be talking about the challenges and transformative power of First Nations language reclamation.
