Hello all, thought after recent posts and comments Id start a thread about starting a gallery. Joy could probably answer most peoples questions after recently setting up, there are others in the group who already run a gallery or co - operative space so please chip in. Ive looked at the possibilities since before moving to Whitby in 2013 and am still looking to set something up. Ive spoken to a few people locally and views are very mixed. The main hurdle in Whitby at least is finding a venue, leases are expensive and restrictive, generally come with a fully repairing clause, and are few and far between. I know one person who set up a small gallery with friends, after a short while the excuses for non attendance left the gallery closed when it should have been open and in the end it didnt make enough to cover the costs. Looking around the area would seem to indicate that a traditional gallery struggles unless theres good footfall, outside of that the teashop gallery seems a good model but introduces an element that might not appeal to artists. Framing would seem to be a way of regular income while waiting for paintings and pots to sell, that introduces another skill to be learned and the risk of holding stock that might not sell. Anyone have any ideas to add?
