Hello and welcome to another edition of “Nathan Doesnt Know the Difference between a Blog Post and a Facebook Status.” Im your host Nathan Tactless. I should preference this with a disclaimer. I am not depressed, nor are these statuses relishing in any sort of angst, or really sort of any feelings at all. Sometimes I just like to semi-intellectually vomit on the Internet and see what the people who happen to accidentally stumble upon it and read it they have to say about it. Just because sometimes I write more than 140 characters in a status doesnt mean that Im sad. I just think that sometimes its better to experience an entire thought instead of just a small piece of one that fits into a box small enough that you think people might read it. It’s funny how the content in media has shrunk over time. If you look at magazine ads, for example, from decades ago starting, I dont know, in the fifties and then take issues from the same magazine and look at the as they develop over the course of a 10 years apart and you’ll see how they just diminish to nothing. You’ll see how people shout to try to be heard and this vast cesspool of people virtually shouting at humans who stare at screens; and Im one of these people so Im not necessarily criticizing, but I am upset sometimes with how much I stare at the screen and how much I miss not staring at this thing. Look at the explosion of acronyms ffs. idk wtf anybody is saying anymore. TLDR. Maybe I’m being crotchety, but I keep returning to a quote that floats around the internet. Einstein said, “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots. Actually, Einstein didnt say that, but it makes for a good meme. I’m not sure if this is a trend that has been going on for generations or not, but I feel like we don’t really talk to each other. We shout into space because we feel more comfortable communicating to a screen than a person. Maybe those should have been first person pronouns. I know the screen is new, but I thought we had figured out open communication by now. I’m proud of technology and disappointed by its repercussions. I can feel social and disconnected at the same time scrolling through Facebook. People posting publicly private proclamations of pride, principles and prose. Talking by typing through telephones. I wonder if the number of words I type are catching up to the number of words I speak. I wonder if there will be a generation of people who have typed more words than have spoken in their lives. Go take your friend out to lunch. You dont need an occasion for it. Put your phone down for a bit. I know this is becoming a trope, but theres good reason for it. Dont forget to talk. Dont keep yourself from telling somebody what youre thinking, even if you are worried about the repercussions. Be honest with people. For the most part, theyll understand. If they dont, theyre not worth your time.
