Hello drunkness my old friend/ Ive come to talk with you again because a liquor softly pouring/all my joy has been restoring and the liquor that was planted in my veins/ still remains among the sounds of slurring In restless bars I drank alone/ where the beer and whiskeys flowin where the jukebox filled the air/I turned my glass until it was bare and my eyes were stabbed by a taverns neon light/ that split the night among the sounds of slurring And in the naked light I saw/ a dozen people, maybe more people flirting, not romancing/people grinding without dancing people singing songs that kids should never hear/though none were near among the sounds of slurring Fools, said I, you do not know- drunkness like addiction grows give me dollars and toss me cents/Give me money to pay my rent and my words like slurring raindrops fell and echoed in the wells of slurring and the people bowed and prayed/ to the hop-filled god they made and the sign flashed out closing time/while I sang out my final rhyme and the rhyme said Whack fol the derry oh, theres whiskey in the jar (and Johnsons Motor Car) and echoed the sounds of slurring
