Hello everyone, Ive been made aware of several recent incidents - TopicsExpress

Hello everyone, Ive been made aware of several recent incidents on FB that got quite nasty regarding sharing of photos. Several people have contacted me unsure of what to do about Sharing photos from Instagram & Twitter & Facebook. Ive been on the net since the early 1990s, hosting various tv and fan web sites and dealt with many Directors, Producers, Writers, Cast, Crew, TV Networks, Lawyers and many more associated with the industry for all my fan sites. With that experience, this is my understanding & explanation:- SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORKING SITES such as Facebook, Instagram & Twitter are for the PUBLIC and those sites are all intended for *SHARING*. Most celebrities/actors who share their photos do so, KNOWING that they will be SHARED. The dont mind ... especially since they are getting free publicity. They do not *EXPECT* people to ask permission to do SHARE as it is the MAIN reason why they are posting in the first place and most actors/celebs have 2 accounts of each. One private and one public for the fans. Sharing is *EXPECTED* from their PUBLIC accounts! Its FREE marketing for them. Its NOT a matter of most sharers not having any respect for that person when they share from Fan Pages, they simply enjoy what they see and want it on their timeline so they can look at it often and easily. Permission is NOT required for anything already published in magazines or newspapers once published as then they are PUBLIC but the © still stands. On Facebook MORE people break Copyright Laws by stealing photos, using them in their own fan art, and watermarking them denoting themselves as the owners. Some of us have permission to watermark photos - others dont. Fortunately for us, most TV Network Executives/Directors/Producers etc all turn a blind eye to this, (because they are getting free publicity) or wed all be in the same jail cell! I am Friends with several actors/celebs personal profiles here and I have NEVER taken or shared any of their PRIVATE photos from their PRIVATE profiles. I have always sought permission where *required* and always used links and names the source for shared photos, but Ive had so much of my own content stolen that I had to watermark everything. Very rarely does anyone ask my permission to share my content, and YES it would be really nice if more people did (considering its been taken & shared for years all over the net as it is), however, I am happy for fans to share my content, as long as they do NOT CROP OFF the watermark and re-use the pictures, especially without naming me as the source. Thats why I had to start watermarking all my own. Unfortunately, Facebook has enabled stealing, and theres nothing anyone can do about that except to safeguard your own personal pictures by watermarking them. Thats the price we pay for using a free hosting service and why Ive always had my own Galleries. If anybody, posting photos doesnt want their photos shared - then they really shouldnt put them up on a social networking sharing site. Even if you ask - people will only ignore you and take them anyway. Ive seen quite a lot of photos shared when they should not have been and any placed on my sites are immediately removed. I hope this helps, if youre still unsure about anything please do feel free to PM me. Helen xo
