Hello everyone and welcome to todays edition of Sunday Standard Demolition. Todays write up will be a bit different from what Ive been doing as of late which is taking the most popular archetypes in the current meta, posting up a recent list that won a major event, and breaking down the deck to help all of you understand how it not only wins but also the cards you need to deal with in order to really win the matchup against said archetype. I was asked last week if I could cover U/W Control instead of the sixth most popular archetype in the current meta and I decided that I most certainly would do so seeing as how thats my favorite archetype of all time(Jund being second followed by Grixis Control). U/W Control hasnt really been the deck of choice this season for many players when it comes to just those two colors(60 list over the span of 5 different magic the gathering deck list sites) majorly due to people liking and playing the more aggressive version called U/W Heroic more because it can kill your before they even know it unless of course theyre playing Stormbreath Dragons and Deflecting Palms like myself lol. Kidding aside lets get to the latest list shall we... U/W Control 4th Place SCG INVITATIONAL SEATTLE by Jim Davis 1 Pearl Lake Ancient 4 Dissolve 2 Last Breath 3 Jaces Ingenuity 3 Nullify 2 Devouring Light 3 Disdainful Stroke 3 Dig Through Time 3 End Hostilities 2 Divination 4 Banishing Light 3 Elspeth, Suns Champion 5 Island 2 Plains 4 Flooded Strand 2 Evolving Wilds 4 Temple of Enlightenment 4 Radiant Fountain 4 Tranquil Cove 2 Polluted Delta SIDEBOARD: 2 Omenspeaker 3 Brimaz, King of Oreskos 3 Negate 1 Last Breath 1 Fated Retribution 3 Erase 1 Whelming Wave 1 Glare of Heresy I know that some of you are probably thinking...Why did Jace pick this list over all the others that have placed third or better? Ill tell you why. I chose Jims list over the other 5 list because this is the list you should be playing(Or at least very close to it) when playing U/W Control(I dont really like the Omenspeakers in the sideboard because all it really does is allows you to look at your next two cards and potentially block a creature for one turn. Id rather play two Nyx Fleece Rams because they can not only block turn after turn they can also help keep you live longer thanks in part to the life gain each turn). The key cards to this deck are the Pearl Lake Ancient, Elspeth, Dig Through Time, and Brimaz. Pearl Lake Ancient is very hard to deal with but also very easy because all you really need to do is have a couple kill spells because mostly all of the control players will want to save him by returning three lands to their hand unless they already have Elspeth and her three 1/1 Soldiers in play at which point they wont actually care even though he does create a faster clock for them to kill you. Elspeth is another major factor in this deck that needs to be dealt with ASAP because if left unchecked for a few turns her ultimate ability to pump up all the 1/1 Soldiers shes been making each turn into 3/3 Flyers can and will kill you in just one full attack. Dig Through Time is something else that needs to be dealt with because if you dont it can help your opponent find both an Elspeth and Pearl Lake Ancient or something else that just might be needed in order to stay in control(Ie Dissolve or End Hostilities). Brimaz is the final card in this deck that you really need to deal with because not only can he bring a Vigilant friend with him when he attacks he also does so when he blocks and that can make attacks/blocks very awkward and not so favorable. I hope that all of my knowledge has helped you fine folks gain a better understanding of the current meta archetypes and how theyre able to continue their winning ways. P.S. Ive recently decided to do another article for all of you every second Saturday starting Jan. 17 headlining Standard Pauper(For those of you that are unfamiliar with the format Pauper is played with only the COMMONS in said format and decks still abide by the 60 card minimum in the main and 15 max in the sideboard). Ill not only be featuring local list but also Net Decks and breaking them down for you. -Jace-
