Hello everyone, had a small doubt about the Related ii-7 to V - TopicsExpress

Hello everyone, had a small doubt about the Related ii-7 to V Substitute Dominants. Usually,i compose a melody and then assign chords to the melody. So if i use a SECONDARY DOMINANT in the progression ii-7 to its V which settles down a perfect 5th down, it sounds good with my melody. But moment i assign a ii-7 to its Sub V7 chord to my MELODY which settles ONE SEMITONE down, that always sounds a bit weird because both the chords are Non- diatonic. My entire melody would be in one key and these Sub chords(ii-7 to Sub V7) are totally in another key. so if i try assigning such chords it begins to sound dissonant. Very rarely i have been able to assign such Non-Diatonic Substitutions to a melody. The ii-7 to Secondary Dominant V7 sounds good if assigned to my melody because both chords most often have Diatonic roots. So how can we use the ii-7 to a SubV7 which settles back into our original key one semitone down chord progression with a melody??...or Is it that in such a case we have to make the chord progression FIRST and make the melody flow depending on those Sub chords?A common example would be how to use Db-7 to F#7 (ii-7 to SubV7) settling down to F major with a melody composed in the C major key?? please please help. Thank you very very much in advance :) God bless
