Hello everyone, here are the weather stories I am working on in - TopicsExpress

Hello everyone, here are the weather stories I am working on in Weather Center: * Very warm air for Colorado this weekend/isolated storms * Very warm to hot air across much of the U.S. * Best rain chances this weekend across the eastern half of the U.S. * Long Range Outlook COLORADO FORECAST ---------------------------------- First off for Colorado, we have been enjoying normal to below normal temps across much of the state in August. That will not change for at least the next 7 days. Temps are going to soar across the Front Range and Urban Corridor into the 90s through at least next Friday. The towns included are Lyons, Boulder, Fort Collins, extending east to Denver and then north to the Wyoming border. Adjacent towns to this line will also be included, for example, Longmont, Windsor, Loveland Berthoud Greeley and all of Denver Metro. Temps in the Foothills will be in the 80s, with the chance to hit 90 not out of the question. This includes Estes, Nederland and Pinewood Springs and adjacent foothill towns to these locations. We knew soon or later August would rear its ugly hot head. Check out map number 1, and it explains the heat source. A very strong High Pressure system in the upper levels of the atmosphere will situate itself over AZ and NM. This will help to cut off the monsoonal flow in to Colorado and keep the heat pouring in from the desert southwest. Now this doesnt mean we wont see any moisture. It just means the moisture chances will be low with no more than a 20 to 30% chance of rain over the next 7 days. Today is a good example of what I am talking about. Lyons has already experienced moderate to heavy rains today. Afternoon heating will be responsible for firing up storms in the Foothills and along the Front Range. Some storms could drop very heavy rains in isolated locations just like what happened in Longmont yesterday. This though will not be the rule but the exception. Most folks will see very warm temps today through the weekend and extending into next week. Any rains that do pop will help bring some temporary cooling. Check out the Long Range Outlook in the last segment. I talks about the potential for a big change headed our way. U.S. FORECAST ----------------------- For the rest of the country, refer to maps 1 and 2. Map 2 is the high temp map for Saturday which will also cover Sunday as well. Much of the country is basking in summer-like temps. The hottest temps will be found in Texas and parts of New Mexico, Arizona and California. There temps will bolt above 100 in some spots. Map number 1 is the upper level weekend map. Where the Upper Level High rules, so goes the hot temps. The coolest temps will be across the upper Midwest, extending through the Ohio Valley and into the Northeast. Pleasant temps will also be found along the banks of the west coast. Other than that, get ready to roast across most of the country this weekend. The best chances for moisture (map 3 will be across those same areas where the cooler temps will be found. If you are in the blue, purple or red shaded areas, you could see moisture over the weekend in the 1 plus inch range. That red area in Illinois is where the heaviest rains could fall. LONG RANGE OUTLOOK (following weekend) --------------------------------------------------------------- For the following weekend, I am watching a fairly strong cold front dropping out of Canada. This is not frigid by any stretch, but it signals the type of fronts that start making their way into the U.S from Canada this time of year. If the GFS computer model (map 4) verifies, rain chances will be increasing over Colorado and extending into the upper Midwest. Cooler air will be found behind the front which should break the string of very warm temps in Colorado. Timing and intensity could change dramatically between now and next weekend so Ill be monitoring other computer models as well for confirmation. In my next post, Ill be talking about the 90 day outlook from Sept through November. It looks rather interesting for Colorado and other parts of the country. Could be a cold and snowy fall for Colorado. More to come on the longer range outlook.
