Hello everyone,went out to a bar-b que today and got to talking about Popeye and leishmaniasis or leishmanosis, well I will try to be brief and simple, understand I am not a vet,this a disease that is spread by the bite from a sand fly,similar to malaria, you can only catch it from this bite,humans can also get it.The sand fly is brown in colour hence its name and it lives in greenery shrub, it is most active at dawn or dusk,the bite infects the animal with a parasite that then invades the body and unless treated will kill the dog.Ben Fogle the TV presenter and explorer caught it in a tropical jungle underwent 2 courses of treatment and got rid of the parasite.This disease can lay dormant in and animals for years.it is curable if caught early enough.you can take preventative steps for this disease by inoculating against it or buying a scalibor flea tick and sand fly collar.Dogs that live indoors are less likely to catch this disease,but it is not always the case.it will affect young, old ,strong, weak animals alike.You can read up more about it on line or ask your vet.
