Hello fellow Groves Graduates! It’s really amazing hearing everyone’s interesting and unique paths in life post graduation. Very awesome! I graduated from Groves in 2006. Post Groves, I attended Central Michigan University (Fire Up Chips!), and graduated with my BS in Biomedical Science in 2011. During my time at CMU, I had the great privilege of conducting an independent research project, through the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program, on hydrogen producing genes in an environmental bacterium called Cyanobacteria. This amazing program gave me the opportunity to discover my passion for conducting research on the “unknown”, and the tools necessary to purse a degree in graduate school. Directly after graduating from CMU, I decided to purse a Ph.D. in microbiology. Currently, I am in my 4th year (almost done…2 more years at most) in my Ph.D. program at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. I have the amazing opportunity to work on one of the world’s newest hot research topics, which is resolving the decline in health of the world’s most important commercially utilized pollinator, the honey bee. Yes, I study one of the insects many fear (picture below is of some of my lab’s hives we maintain on campus). Currently, my research focuses on determining the vital role(s) bacteria, present in the honey bee gut, play in maintain the health of the honey bee. More specifically, my work focuses on characterizing the metabolic attributes of bacteria present and active in the honey bee gut, and how those potentially important bacteria could aid in the digestion of the honey bee’s difficult to degrade herbivorous diet. If interested in reading more on what I do, here’s a link to my first 1st author paper that was recently published this summer- t.co/x4w33bdvY5, and a link to my Professors Blog which highlights my recent work- microdiv.blogspot/2014/07/how-sweet-it-is-metatranscriptomics-of.html I thoroughly enjoy my science and life, and cant wait to meet the next milestones in life. Wishing Everyone The Best, Freddy
