Hello fellow sound artists and supporters! I am just a high school - TopicsExpress

Hello fellow sound artists and supporters! I am just a high school senior, but I have been lucky enough to mix sound and design lights part-time at one of the most acoustically perfect concert and performance halls in the U.S., so I have some idea of the field. Not once has the audience walked out complaining that the lighting was terrible...but we sure have had plenty of comments regarding poor sound... For a young aspiring sound engineer such as myself, it is disconcerting that a difficult and artistically rich possible career path is being treated as a menial 9 to 5 button pushing type of job. When I saw Hedwig and the Angry Inch this summer, mixed by the incomparable Bob Etter, I was blown away by the separation of the vocals and the rest of the rock band (especially the 2 guitars). Although in virtually the same frequency range, not a single lyric was lost amid the wash of screaming distortion and cymbals. Masterful and careful EQ at its finest. It was not only functional, but gave Stephen Trasks phenomenal score a vehicle to emotionally affect every person sitting (and standing) in that theater. Without every lyric clearly and smoothly articulated, much of the nights magic would have been lost. Thats not science, thats art.
