Hello folks. Im a former prison officer/ ambulance driver from Milford, currently living in Oxford. Heres another scary fact for you in the closing of Withybush SCBU. A standard A+E spec ambulance; whether a box build or van build; doesnt carry the equipment a sick neonate requires. To transport a sick neonate or baby needs specialised transport from the ground up. The ambulance must have the floor attachments to secure 200kg of Drager(other brands are available) neonatal transport incubator. The vehicle its self should also be a higher power variant, though its not strictly necessary. All of the equipment must be the size for a neonate. And lastly while a paramedic is fantastic, they are not a specialist neonatal transport nurse. Which you need two of. And then off course the highly trained ambulance driver, who knows the roads like the back of his hand. Every bend and pothole plotted, so the passenger has the smoothest ride possible. Have you got one of them down there? Didnt think so. This service is usually run by a private ambulance company; like Medical Services UK, GSL, St Johns; there are literally dozens! Why? Because such a vehicle would need to be on call and ready to move very quickly, that means it cant be a front line bus, because if it was in use it would be an asset being taken out of use for hours! Where as a private sector crew can be sitting waiting all the time. So if you dialled 999 right now, your sick child would be taken to WBH where they would work out it was beyond them, and then theyd arrange transport to...... Where ever there was a bed. It will take deaths; or more likely litigation to make them change their minds. This is what happens when healthcare is marshalled by accountants!
