The Shawnigan Lake Bioremediation Committee has taken the first steps in developing an affordable solution to pollution in our lake. Mushrooms feed on hydrocarbons from boat oil, riparian plants clean the water and provide habitat for aquatic animals. Overall, this technology can be up to 3 times more effective than a traditional treatment wetland. Normally it can cost up to a thousand dollars per square foot for commercial grade Floating Treatment Wetlands. Total cost for our prototype: free old wharf, about $2 in gasoline and $10 for landscape fabric plus 5 hours of volunteer labour. Out floating wetland is 144 square feet for $12.
