Hello great people of God! Happy Easter Holidays! I am sure youre all in good shape and have something to thank God for. President Obama has invited African Heads of State and Government for a Summit in Washington this August and the theme of the event is Investing in the next generation The American President thought it wise to seek our opinion as young African leaders on what suggestions he may give to the African Presidents on youth engagement and empowerment. We therefore had a teleconference on the 15th April 2014 with Representatives of the American Government. Participants in the teleconference included Hon. Victor Akubasu, Hon Fredrick Afuoko, Hon Ronald Tarus, Hon Collins Wekesa, Hon Lydia Munikah and Hon Aisha Fuad. The following were the concerns raised during the teleconference Hopelessness The feeling of hopelessness pervades youth. They feel they cannot have an impact on their future. They are jobless, poor and don’t see a positive future. This is one of the root causes of insecurity and terrorism. We feel there is a need for governments and NGOs to invest in youth empowerment. Empowerment is defined as having real decision making power and then taking responsibility. A concrete partnership between youth and government and/or NGOs is required. Youth want to participate in leading the country. Token involvement by just being “consulted” is not enough. Youth need to be part of the decision making process on policy and investment. Too often, politics marginalize youth in real decision making and participation by only consulting them but not involving them in decision making process. Another part of this equation is the ability to get a good education. School Drop outs are a problem. They cannot compete will in the job market and their capacity need to be enhanced with employable skills. Investment in Democracy and Governance Youth need to understand what strong, democratic institutions and values look like so they can practice them. The rule of law is key to fighting corruption and holding officials accountable. Investment in civil society will mitigate the impact of impunity in holding people accountable for their actions. Health Sector Child and Maternal health care are critical. Governments need to deliver on care. Economic Independence Economic insecurity is at the root of many problems. Youth need the prospect of long term employment to move ahead whether in the informal or formal sector. We also requested President Obama to request African Heads of States to ensure youth inclusion in their leadership. We hope that we will see more youth engagement, participation and social economic empowerment by our Governments after the August Presidential Summit in Washington. May God bless you all this Easter. Regards Sincerely, Didas Mzirai, President, National Youth Bunge Association/ Yes Youth Can
