Hello landlords and friends, I got the crap scared out of me - TopicsExpress

Hello landlords and friends, I got the crap scared out of me tonight LOL! I always watch the martins and their nests very closely at this time of the year when the babies are getting fed and getting older. So I have been watching this older nest that was the second to hatch, out of all the nests, so tonight once again going on 2 days I saw these babies out on the porch of the THG with the conley II entrance. I was wondering why they were already out on the porch this early in the year. It is not hot and it has rained too. So after watching it right at dark I saw the baby falling off the porch while the parents were watching it trying to flap its wings to get back up but fell off to the other porch of another gourd below this gourd which saved this baby from falling to the ground. So I lowered the rack and put all the babies back inside but their was only one baby inside. I took the lid off to check in on the nest to see what was going on. I had a feeling it was either a wet nest or mites, or maybe both. To my worst nightmare to being very scared, LOL, it was loaded with mites. The nest was wet also! Probably from the babies going in and out all day in the rain, trying to get relief from the mites, got the nest wet. So tomorrow after work, I will get some sevin dust and will clean out the wet nest and put dry pine straw or needles back in the gourd along with a lot of sevin! Good news is on the way right after work for this family. This is why I like to stay around 100 pairs of martins so I can help them out when problems happen just like this nest tonight. Remember look out and watch them at least 1-2 hours a day or evening to check for things like this folks! It will save a lot of babies lives and save the parents from their worst nightmares. Thanks!
