Hello my loves! Surgery is complete! Doctor just came out to talk to me. All went well. They did not have to remove nor change any of his original hardware. Cleaned up all the infection here, there, and everywhere. The infection was causing a lot of damage at an alarmingly fast rate. They removed multiple discs and rebuilt them with powered cadaver bone, sponges, and antibiotic powder. They continued the original fusion from T12 and extended it to L3. They will keep a very close eye on L4. Dr. Rodgers said his spine was VERY unstable because of all the deterioration. The bottom of his spine was literally bent at an unnatural angle, pinching down on nerves and the cord causing the extreme pain he was in. He will have surgery site pain (initially) but that chronic severe pain he was experiencing should now be gone! Praise God! Now we wait. They will take him to a PICU room for a few days because he once again had to have multiple blood transfusions. Then to a regular room. Hospital stay will be at least a week. They wont send us on our way until all these infections are under control, figured out, and pinpointed. They will make sure the right antibiotics are in place AND working. They also want to get him back to ground zero so to speak nutritionally because once again, all of this has wreaked havoc on his whole system. At home we will be looking at continued antibiotics through the PICC line and back to wearing the back brace for at least 3 months. Oh, yes, the beloved turtle shell will be back! ;) Overall, good news in that things are getting fixed, corrected, and put back to normal...whatever OUR normal may be. Praise The Lord!
