Hello, my name is Grace and I am HIV negative. My parents were not - TopicsExpress

Hello, my name is Grace and I am HIV negative. My parents were not rich, mommy sold kelewele at night whiles daddy served as a bus driver at the Tema station. One Friday night whiles my brothers and I helped our mother get the plantain ready for frying we heard someone screaming for my mother. It was my father’s friend covered in blood; my father had been in a fatal accident. My mother quickly dropped everything she was doing, called a neighbour to watch over us and rushed to the hospital to see my father. For hours I was up waiting, hoping to get some news about my father but eventually I dosed off. The next morning I woke up to the sight of countless family members in despair. My father had died. Life after my father’s death was difficult, my mother could barely make ends meet. She had also begun to fall sick frequently; she lost weight and began to get sores and boils on different parts of her body. She went to visit the doctor and after a series of tests, she was confirmed to be HIV/AIDS positive. My mother was devastated, she had not been with any other man apart from my father and she had never shared any sharp instruments with anybody. The only explanation was that my father had given her the disease before he died. Eventually word spread amongst family members of my mother’s disease and they began to neglect us. The little financial help we used to get stopped coming because nobody wanted to be associated with us; we became outcasts. In less than a year my mother passed away. We were left to burry our mother on our own with no help from our extended family. In order to survive my brothers began to live the life of crime but eventually the law caught up with them and they were jailed for thirty years each. I was alone in the world, a 16-year-old orphan without a parents love. I had to survive by any means necessary; I began to sell my body. I told you in the beginning of my story that I was HIV negative but that was based on an old test, I’m afraid to find out what a new test might say.
