Hello, my name is Steve Norrell and I would like to make a quick statement in support of the musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. I am a native of Decatur and I am a product of the Georgia public school system. My family dates back to this area from our countrys origin and I take great pride in my heritage. Currently I am my 34th year as bass trombonist of the Metropolitan Opera orchestra and I am a charter member of the University of Georgias Presidents Club. During my career Ive had the good fortune to work with some of the finest conductors of our time. The one constant in all of these experiences is how their greatness inspires everyone to play better than they ever even envisioned possible. This is obviously one of the wonderful aspects of our profession. Having to fight for the artistic integrity of your orchestra versus your own management isnt, but unfortunately necessary for this institution. Instead of accepting the challenge of raising sufficient funds to support the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, management along with the Woodruff Arts Center wants to renege on its responsibility of supporting a full-size orchestra. This concept is so foreign to musicians would never tell a conductor that they are not capable or willing to try and honoring a Maestros artistic request. Is it fair to ask musicians who are not going to give anything less than 100% to only be compensated fractionally. Especially when they are asked to perform these works after being down sized.. Two years ago, these musicians were forced to accept the loss of several positions, but the current minimum is as small as they can go and still be able to perform much of their repertoire. Musicians of the Atlanta Symphony deserves leadership as opposed to the mentality of how much easier it would be to operate a chamber orchestra. Thank you.
