Hello neighbor, can we talk?, you may not know me, so, let me introduce myself, I am your Letter Carrier (your Mailman), I come to your house everyday, 6 days a week, no matter where you live and I have been delivering your mail for 200 plus year. I am a proud member of the National Association of Letter Carriers (the NALC). I travel through every neighborhood, everyday and far too often I come face to face with Hunger, with this in mind, the NALC in conjunction with the United States Postal Service and several corporate sponsors are proud to announce the 2014 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, the food drive is the second Saturday of May, this years food drive will be Saturday, May 10, 2014. The need for food is great. Currently 49 million Americans, 1 in 6 are food insecure (unsure where or when their next meal will come from). 16 million of the 49 million are children, who feel hungers affect on their overall health and their ability to perform in school. Also, some 5 million senior citizens over the age of 60 are food insecure, often too proud or embarrassed to ask for help. The timing of the NALCs food drive is crucial. Food banks and food pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. By the springtime, many food banks and food pantries are depleted, thus leaving food banks and pantries entering the summertime with low or no supplies, at a time when schools are closed for summer vacation, leaving many school age children with no breakfast or lunch. The economic downturn and the slow growing economy has affected millions of Americans. Last year, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive collected over 74 million pounds of food nationally, feeding an estimated 30 million people. Over the 21 year history of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, well over 1 billion pounds of food have been collected, thanks to a postal services universal delivery network that spans the entire nation, including Puertorico, Guam and the U.S. virgin Island. All donations collected go directly to a local food band or pantry to provide help to your neighbors, in your neighborhood. You can participate in this years food drive by simply placing a bag(s) of non-perishable food in your mailbox, hang a bag(s) from your mailbox or place a bag(s) near your mailbox on Saturday, May10, 2014 and I (your letter carrier) will do the rest. The NALC and me are inviting you to join Americans greatest day of giving and the largest single day food collection in the world. Thanks for your support , your Letter Carrier
