Hello rescue and squishy faced dog friends in the North Texas - TopicsExpress

Hello rescue and squishy faced dog friends in the North Texas area. It is raining Shih Tzus and Lhasas at my work and i may need room soon to take in a foster. That said, I would like to share some info on my current foster baby, Mr. Squishy Face. He is a special little guy and needs the most excellent of families to take him under their wing. I already have my coworkers working on rescue options, so this is purely information for a potential adopter. Please share if you are so inclined and we both thank you so much in advance! __________ Mr. Squishy Face is somewhere around 5-6 years old, an unaltered heartworm negative male. He came in as a stray and had been living in a horse stall. Very matted, smelly, and eyes in terrible shape. One of my coworkers groomed him and got a twig out of his eye and the burrs and mats off. His finders expressed interest in adopting but backed out; I think they just didnt want to see him euthanized. I have had Squish Squash or Squishy ,as I call him, in foster care for almost three weeks. Currently, his biggest issues are his chronic dry eye and his skin. At intake he had chronic irritation and green crusty discharge; after his recheck this past Tuesday, the shelter vet says the condition is being managed very well and he continues to have vision from the eyes. He requires 2-4 times a day to have his eyes flushed and gets Cyclosporine ointment in both eyes twice a day. He also has residual skin issues from his poor living conditions plus possible breed related allergy issues, so he is on a grain free dry food diet (Victor) and gets Benadryl and a Ketachlor bath two to three times a week. I have also noticed that he has a little peculiarity to his gait in the back and may have a luxating patella issue, but he gets around just fine and is able to run and play with the other dogs. In order to have a happy and healthy life, he must go to an adopter with the resources to maintain his eyes each and every day for the rest of his life and to have his skin and mobility issues monitored and treated as needed. He plays well with other dogs and cats (just ignores them mostly). He does have an occasional accident but does well when on a routine schedule and does use potty pads if provided. He is best buddies with my 11 month old male Shih Tzu. Squish Squash doesnt love being left alone and can bark and scratch at the door for a few minutes when you leave him alone so he can be crated if need be. Typically he calms down within a few minutes. He spends most of his time with my 11 month old Shih Tzu and he either is playing with Nibbler (Squishy mostly just tolerates being beat up, really), or lounging in the dog bed under the computer. He rides well in the car and has not displayed any aggression for any reason so far. Sometimes he will bark at you for attention or if he thinks you have food. He also hates being photographed, thus the not as glamorous as I would hope photos. Squishy is not super snuggly and is not a kisser but will happily sit on your lap and LOVES belly rubs. Let me know if there is anything else I can share with you in order to help Mr. Squishy Face find a real family. He is a very good dog and I think he has a potential for good quality of life provided he can have his ongoing medical needs met during the rest of his lifetime. I will of course be extremely picky with potential adopters as not only is he my foster baby, but his medical needs are not to be taken lightly and he must have a tremendously understanding owner who can afford his current and future needs. All adopters will go through standard HSNT adoption protocol. You are welcome to message me, email amelia.camperlengo@gmail, or call me at work at 817-332-4768, ext. 106, Thursdays through Mondays. Thank you!
