Hello supporters, We have a bird who needs our help! Recently, I received a request to take an older African Grey Parrot. After reading the story of this birds life, I realize that this bird is a very good candidate for a life here at the sanctuary. Normally, we would have this bird come into our Lifetime of Care Program and for a Congo African Grey that is $1,000 annually. Those currently responsible for the care of the African Grey do not have those kinds of funds to place the bird here, but this is a very special case. This bird has been through many homes over the course of its life, and it is not a candidate that would be good for adoption. This bird needs sanctuary, a place to call home for good. I am attaching his story. One of the family members that does not have the bird is able to donate $200 for the initial veterinary care that will be needed and required in order for it to live here. We need to raise a total of $800 more in order for the bird to come here and have the first year covered. The money goes into a “pot” for food, produce, pellets, propane, future veterinary care, etc. Before the end of the year, we are hoping that we might find someone willing to sponsor the bird for the remaining duration of its life. The beak injuries and the way that his lower beak looks have us a bit worried about his current nutrition as well as the way the toenails look. Another concern is the darkness the bird may possibly be living in. This bird is between 25-30 years old so half of his life is over. Please help us make the second half of his life an amazing one filled with freedom, sunlight on his back, and the breeze in his feathers! Please go to the following link to donate directly to the “Save Pedro Now!” fund. projectperry/#!HelpPedro/c129l Thank you! -Matt Smith. Read on for his story: (posted with permission of the family member that contacted us) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Im writing to you regarding an African Gray parrot that badly needs a new home. His name is Pedro (pronounced Pee-dro). Pedro started out as a petting zoo bird but his zoo shut down. He later lived at a pet store where people seemed to love him. Unfortunately, a child started poking and harassing Pedro until Pedro retaliated and bit him. To my knowledge, that was the first time Pedro ever bit someone. The owner of the bird took him home and kept him in a family room for a time, but that was short lived as the wife wanted the bird out. So Pedro was moved into a small office where he lived with little human contact for years. Eventually, the bird ended up with my mother. She loved Pedro despite him being too aggressive to pet. I worked with Pedro the best I could. Id sit next to his cage and talk to him, Id hand him fruit and nuts, eventually he even let me pet his toes, beak, and on rare occasion the top of his head. About a year and a half ago my mom passed away and my brother stepped up and adopted Pedro. Everything was ok until my brother and his girlfriend broke up. It seems that Pedro prefers the company of women over men and once she left, Pedro became more defensive and more aggressive and now lunges at my brother whenever he gets close to the cage. Worse, Pedro doesnt use his cuddle bone and hes had 2 beak injuries in the last 6 months. Fortunately Pedro lets my brother hand feed him until hes well enough to eat seed. At that point, Pedro becomes nasty again. As I hope you can see, this bird means so much to my family as he was a nice companion for my mom during some difficult times. We want this bird to be happy but despite our best attempts, he seems more miserable than ever. Looking at your site, its my hope that Pedro could have a new life at your sanctuary, one where he could be happy. Is there any room for him there?
