Help! Classic pulp fans ( Charles -- Kris -- and Mike ?) -- Im putting together a short bibliography of seminal pulp works as recommended reading for a summer class Im doing. Goal is to develop a broad-but-shallow list of must-reads for overall familiarity with the various genres of classic pulp. (Yes, I know, Stewart is not very pulpy, but thats only because shes so damn good.) BTW some of these stories I have not yet read, and Im including them based on their reputation. Heres what I got so far. Hammett, Dashiell. The Maltese Falcon. Detective. * Burroughs, Edgar Rice. A Princess of Mars (the John Carter novel). Science fiction. * Smith, E.E. “Doc.” The Skylark of Space. Science fiction: space opera. * Burroughs, Edgar Rice. The Lost Continent. Apocalypse. Dent, Lester. The Man of Bronze (1933). Adventure. * Lovecraft, H.P. The Mountains of Madness. Horror. * Howard, Robert E. Conan the Conquerer (f.k.a. The Hour of the Dragon). Sword-and-sorcery. Stewart, Mary. Nine Coaches Waiting. Romance. Fleming, Ian. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Espionage/romance (!). * Grey, Zane. The Lone Star Ranger. Western. Thanks everybody!
