Help the Birds that provide beauty in the garden As spring starts to share its warmth and plants begin their growing season, it is important to keep our featured friends in mind. Birds that are ending a long migration are hungry and need easy sources of food. Early nesting birds also enjoy an easy source of food for themselves and their young. We put out three types of food – 1) a small bird seed (nijer or a mix for small birds, 2) black oil sunflower seeds and 3) suet). Be ready for spring migration when you might see Scarlet Tanagers, Indigo Buntings, Orioles, Rose Breasted Grosbeaks, Cedar Waxwings, Cardinals, Yellow Warblers, various woodpeckers (Flicker, Red-headed, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Hairy, Downy, Red-bellied and Pileated) as well as many of the winter birds in spring/summer plumage (especially notable are gold finches). Also, clean out any bird houses from last year (preferably in February or March). Wear a mask and gloves to prevent breathing or touching parasites that might be left in nesting materials. Tips provided by the Menominee Historic Downtown Farmers’ Market.
