Help us save Bella! Via Elena Pela Today (May 14) Bella or Yoshi as I have been calling her for the last few days had to be taken away back to the shelter. Though the Nicosia Dog Shelter does its best to accommodate all its dogs; to me Bella was not a dog, she was a soul betrayed by its previous owners but still loyal enough to escape on several occasions and sit outside her old house where she had been abandoned. I was fortunate to have her 24-7 for the last 5 days until my final warning. We live in country of hypocrisy and pretentious behaviour. You will never hear anyone bad-mouth a dog; on the contrary as we are now living in the new era of the modern, open minded, pseudo sensitive - civilized 2014 most will even shed a fake tear when they hear stories such as Bella’s offering to help in any way they can. I don’t consider myself an activist for the shelter neither will I say that I am actively involved in volunteering. One thing I can say is that no stray has come my way and left deserted. Bella came my way, and the story and sadness in her eyes made me keep her. To me she was not the sad story of another dog, she was a depressed and betrayed creature who looked into my eyes with the gratitude and love I have not seen for a long time; humans included. When I asked to keep her on the rental premises on Monday I received a very touching response from my landlord who whole heartedly wanted to help but raised the issue of the other tenants having problems. The truth always has a funny way of surfacing, as I found out today that he was the one with the issue and not anyone else. I must admit it takes some skill to look at someone in the eyes and lie but obviously many of the people surrounding us can do that. Not only did I lose Bella today I lost any trust in the human nature left in me. It’s funny how the human eyes can fool us while the eyes of animals can’t. We are the worse of all species. If each of us was decent enough to contribute to the slightest in an animal’s well being, a difference could actually be made. But caught up in our hypocrisy, sitting on our couch crying over sad movies like “Hachiko” some of us fail to realize the many Hachiko’s out here. Animals with much more loyalty, honesty and love to give than any human I know. Within these five days she was willing to give it all away, her love, her devotion and trust. I feel that in this way I have failed her as she was being taken away today by the van.I felt that through the stare I got from the windows of the van and it made me shiver. If anyone has or knows of an office for rent in Strovolos where humans are as half decent as to allow animals in the premises please contact me at 96533447 or 96867444.
