Helping Stop Bali Pollution. Bali is where I call home. I love so many things about this small island: the culture, the countryside, the food, the surf, the list goes on. Just like everywhere, Bali isnt perfect. One of the biggest problems this beautiful place (and Indonesia in general) faces is pollution. With Balis influx of tourism and migrants from throughout Indonesia, pollution here is only getting worse. Only 25% of Balis waste is collected, leaving the rest to litter its streets and waters. Along with the obvious negatives visible on land, pollution is heavily effecting Balis water and fragile marine ecosystem. Plastic waste is one of the primary concerns. This is not unique to Bali, and most of you have probably heard of the plastic islands in our oceans. But if you walk into any store in Bali and buy something, whether its one bottle of soda or a candy bar, you will undoubtedly receive it in a plastic bag. They are everywhere! In fact, youll even see kids playing with plastic bags (not safe, but thats another discussion entirely), which I can guarantee they didnt pack these away when they finished. So what can you do? Take a minute of your time to sign this petition started by Melati (@AVAAZ.org). They want the government to ban the use of plastic bags in Bali in an effort to curb plastic waste. While this is just one small step, it can make a world of difference. (fw)
