Helping a young BRAT adjust and deal with the challenges of a life - TopicsExpress

Helping a young BRAT adjust and deal with the challenges of a life associated with the military starts at home. I remember my mother writing to the Chamber of Commerce closest to where we were going to be stationed or borrowing books from the library about the country we would be going to. (bear in mind this was long before the internet) She looked for things to see or do around our soon to be home and shared them with us kids. She worked to build positive expectations about where we were going. We were also encouraged to participate in activities such as sports, band, or Scouting. This meant a lot of Mom the taxi driver. Dad spent what time he could with me and I remember many hours spent together shining his boots or brass. I learned a lot about having pride in your profession from our shining sessions together. He also supported us kids in every way he could with our extracurricular endeavors. I remember him driving hours following a team bus to watch baseball games even if all I was doing was riding pine and maybe seeing an inning of action. Football and wrestling he got to see a lot more of me in action. Point is whether I was playing or not I knew he was there and that meant something to me back then and even more now. These are things I remember my parents doing to help me through life as a BRAT. What are some of the things yours did?
