Hemet Petitioners Gather More Than 6000 Signatures To Overturn City Council’s Action To Disband Hemet Fire Department Hemet, Calif. --Supporters of the Hemet Fire Department today handed over roughly 6200 signatures on petitions aimed at overturning the September action by the Hemet City Council majority to disband the city’s 106-year old fire department. Petition signature gathering began on September 17. Roughly 3,300 valid voter signatures are required to compel the City Council, by referendum, to put the question to voters. In 20 days, supporters of the fire department secured nearly twice the number necessary to call for an election. Emily Quast McDonough, co-chair of the Hemet Public Safety Coalition, said she was overwhelmed by the strong support the petition received by Hemet voters. “Hemet residents were seeking out the petition circulators in order to voice their strong opposition to disbanding our fire department,” added McDonough. Referendum laws give the City Council 30 days to verify the number of ballot signatures. # # # Paid for by Hemet Firefighters Association PAC #1331855 4667 Beeshou Way, Hemet, CA 92544 Proudly serving the community for over 100 years
