Henrietta Maria of France, wife of Charles I and Queen consort of England, Scotland, and Ireland, was born on this day 25 November 1609. Henrietta Maria was a controversial choice of wife - she was staunchly Catholic - and so many in Protestant England were unhappy with the match. She and Charles had several children including Charles II; Mary, Princess Royal (and later Princess of Orange); James II; Henry; and the ever-popular Minette. I remember Antonia Fraser describing Henrietta Maria as rather marsupial in appearance because of her very long arms. She also had wonky teeth, apparently. 1) Porträt der Königin Henrietta Maria, mit Zwerg Sir Jeffrey Hudson by van Dyck. 2) Henrietta Maria, photographed by Andrea Zuvich at the In Fine Style exhibition at Buckingham Palace.
