Henry Sy, the Philippines’ Retail King, established the SM malls. Who is he? Started from a humble beginning selling shoes in Quiapo, Manila in 1958, Sy’s first Shoemart grew to become the largest retail company in the Philippines now popularly known as SM Malls. His retail business also gives birth to more business ventures that include banking (Banco De Oro and Chinabank), real estate (SM Investments Corporation) and leisure (Highlands Prime, Inc., Belle Corporation). Sy heads SM Prime Holdings, Inc. which is the holding corporation for all of his huge business interests. In 1999 he has been awarded by the Makati Business Club as the Management Man of the Year. It was also during that year that the De La Salle University conferred him an Honorary Doctorate in Business Management. Henry Sy also never forgets to give back. He established the SM Foundation which aims to help young underprivileged and promising Filipinos. According to Forbes, he is as of March 2013, the richest Filipino with an estimated net worth of $13.2 billion.
