Henry and I watched the original Snow Whiteon VHS the other night and since then Ive been wondering why I let my kid watch this frightening crap. Dont get me wrong, its a great story with top notch character development (i.e. Grumpys final transformation into a warm-hearted softy dwarf). But lets take a deeper look at the bottom line in this film. The old witch makes a poisonous apple that doesnt kill Snow White, it PUTS HER IN A COMA THAT WILL TRICK ALL THE DWARFS INTO BURYING HER ALIVE. Comfy, if youre Hannibal Lecter. *Ace Ventura voice And then I started thinking about all the other classic (newer & older) childrens movies and what the hell? They all have a similar disturbingly scary plot line. Rapunzel? Some old witch STEALS this poor kid from her parents in the middle of the night and keeps her captive in a tower for her entire youth. Lion King? Murderous & contriving other lion dude thats trying to kill and/or capture Simba. Peter Pan? Old man Hook is trying to capture & kill this poor kid that rolls around in tights sniffin on pixie dust. Leave Pete alone ya demonic one-hander. Jeez, why not have a story where a couple kids go on fun adventures through space where all the other characters they come across are friendly, helpful, down to party, but not down for a genocidal rampage? No wonder I had intense nightmares all throughout my childhood. This world is completely messed up, but I am not going to let my son grow up thinking theres some evil force out there thats gonna poison his Honeycrisp apple and bury him alive.
