Hephzibah Hephzibah Scripture References—2 Kings 21:1; Isaiah 62:4 Name Meaning—My delight is in her This musical, symbolic name was borne by the wife of godly King Hezekiah, who became the mother of his son, Manasseh. Manasseh, who reigned over Judah for 55 years, a longer period than any other king, was as ungodly as his father was godly. He was the exact opposite of his father both in life and in the leadership of the nation. Hephzibah is Jehovah’s symbolical name of Zion when restored to His favor— “Thou shalt be called by a new name....Thou shalt be no more termed Forsaken (Agubah, the name of the mother of Jehoshaphat), neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate (Shemamah), but thou shalt be called Hephzibah (my delight is in her) and thy land Beulah” (married). The words “desolate,” “forsaken” and “married” also appear in a similar promise (Isaiah 54:1, 6). Having lived and prophesied in the days of good King Hezekiah, it was appropriate for Israel to employ the use of symbolical names in the writing of his prophecies. Hezekiah’s marriage to Hephzibah naturally suggested Beulah, meaning “married,” and also the implication of the queen’s name, “My delight is in her.” These names are likewise symbolic of the church. Paul speaks of her as being married to Christ whose delight is in her.
