Her name is Lucy and she lives year-round on St. Lucia. She speaks with a British accent, has long reddish hair, and after an hour or two of playing together while waiting for their plane to take off, it was a done deal. I’m in St. John with SM and his friends, who have two of the sweetest boys you can imagine. Bodhi is the eldest, with gentle, clear blue eyes and a sensitive spirit, and he has just fallen—hard—for a little girl he met at the airport. As fate would have it, Lucys seat was right behind Bodhis. And according to Bodhis dad, the entire flight he was beside himself, racked with nerves about giving her the friendship bracelet he had been making for her to wear as a ring. He was suffering, mustering the guts to present his gift to her. His dad was psyching him up, but he could NOT get it together. He didnt have to. Toward the end of the trip, Lucy from St. Lucia handed him a picture she had drawn especially for him. At the persuasion of his pops, he finally asked her for her email in case they ever wanted to set up an inter-island play date. That night, as his dad was tucking him in, he asked, Papa, how did you get Mom? Did you show off a lot? Yeah, you show off, chimed in the five-year old, nodding. The next day was Valentines day, and Bodhi was in another world: Hey Mama, he asked. What does lovesick mean? First of all, how cute is Bodhi? Do you remember your first crush? How old were you? What was his name? I want to know! Someone was crushing—majorly. Later that day, his parents helped Bodhi spell her name in the sand (and a heart), and took a picture of it to send to her along with a poem that he wrote all by himself. (Mama, how do you spell soul?) Lucy wrote back right away saying she LOVED the Valentine, and she was sad that he couldnt make it to her birthday party that weekend. Tomorrow, were renting a boat. Bodhi wants to know if we can swing by St. Lucia on our way to snorkeling. (Melt!)
