Her writing about witchcraft and spirituality was not my bag. But Margot Adler, who died yesterday, was one hell of a journalist and a broadcaster of verve and conscience. Behind her NPR reporting was a deep-seated passion for civil rights which led her from registering voters in Mississippi in the dangerous summer of 1965 to crucial, compassionate New York and national-affairs coverage from the earliest AIDS epidemic through Occupy Wall Street. At WBAI in the 70s she was a pioneer in thoughtful, engaging freeform radio; the listening and storytelling skills Margot honed there eventually made her one of NPR’s most distinctive voices, most memorably in her powerful series Justice Talking, still archived at justicetalking/ShowArchive.aspx.
