Here I am re-posting an article I wrote about Piazzollas music for the anniversary of his birth. Originally in Spanish but here is an English Translation, courtesy of Valeria Caeiro. Hope you like it! Piazzolla´s Music from a Musician´s Standing Point Although analyzing and savoring a musical composition from a technical point of view or even considering its aesthetic beauty might be tempting, I think figuring out its essence behind the notes is a bigger challenge. Decoding its emotional force. Being an interpreter and composer myself, my key goal is to decipher that magic behind the notes, and discover how it is possible to become a bridge between the composer and his work, and ultimately his audience. When it comes to Piazzolla´s work, it is easy for the listener to fall in the temptation of getting carried away by certain superficial features, circular harmonies, recurrent melodic turns and rhythm patterns commonly found in his music. It is true that these elements shape the core of his musical universe, but if his music is explored and interpreted even further, an emotional state prevails: the reminiscence of a nostalgic world clashing with modern world ghosts, an incessant inner world crisis. The message behind all the artifice is probably the most honest and human quality found in his music. In his work, music is presented as the embodiment of different cultures, but with a recognizable signature of a nostalgic Buenos Aires, a changing Argentina and a perpetual romanticism. Renaissance, transformation and acceptance of our human condition are the blending elements; “Tango” music recalls the old neighborhood and academic music universalizes the message. by Nahuel Bronzini Translation by Valeria Caeiro
