Here are 3 illustrations from Saturdays scrimmage illustrating where we went wrong in the first half. To scrummage you need to be lower than the opposition, preventing them from getting under you, if you dont you will go up. The lower you are the further back you can position your feet and you will automatically exert more pressure on the opposition without working at it. Take a look at our leg positions, they are almost at a right angle to our bodies, with this stance it is practically impossible to push. As an example of this stand upright and put both hands on a wall, now, step back one foot and feel the pressure on your hand increase. Keep stepping back and you will feel even greater pressure. Try it. Another important aspect is the tightness of the bind. When the weight comes on the scrum will start to split at the weakest bind, it is not a pleasant thing. My suggestion for the front row forwards, when you are at home is to get down in a push up position with your back flat and your butt down, get comfortable and hold that position. thats the position you need to be in to overcome ANY opposition. if your butt is high you will buckle. The lower you are in the front row the lower the scrum will be as a whole, it is what we want to exert maximum pressure without even a push. Another thing we need is a cadence so that all 8 push together at the same time, it is far more successful than 8 individuals pushing at different times. I could go on and on but thats the basics and thats what we need, exert pressure without working. I will cover angles etc. when you all digest this. I am looking forward to us improving on this, as we did Saturday, so think over what is needed. Coach.
