Here are a few pics about an interesting new innovation thanks to Steve Scothern, who has joined the Fishery team on a 9 week contract to help us undertake research work at the Waipa Stream fish trap. Steve is a qualified electrician and biologist and brings with him an array of very useful skills. Hes building an electronic counter for the fish trap to count individual fish as they enter the trap. Basically it works like a cat flap that the fish have to nudge open, then the count will then be emailed back to the office where staff will be able to monitor the number of fish in the trap externally. In time it is hoped that environmental conditions such as stream flow, water temperature, rainfall etc will also be recorded and transmitted back to the office in real time to continually monitor what is occurring at the fish trap. Ultimately there will be time savings, as less staff visits will be required to the fish trap especially during quiet periods which will allow staff to undertake other work such as advocacy and compliance.
