Here are a few shots from the Chicago International Film Festival. Films we saw included “Osage County” featuring dreadful overacting by Meryl Streep, wonderful story telling in “12 Years a Slave”, and an uncomfortable performance by Daniel Radcliff in “Killing Your Darlings” a vignette from the early days of the Beat Generation of Poetry. My favorites were “Allen Partridge” a British comedy hostage story set at a radio station, Inside Llewyn Davis, an amazing life search using folk music of the ‘60s as the vehicle with an Oscar-worthy performance by Oscar Isaak as a drifting folk singer with no anchor in his life, and best of all was Bruce Dern’s masterpiece, “Nebraska.” The entertaining post movie conversations were highlighted by Isaac’s discussion of working with the Cohen Brothers and Bruce Dern’s priceless ramblings about working with Alfred Hitchcock. My favorite moment of the week was meeting Ken Nordine, the voice of the festival. I have spent countless hours listening to Ken’s late night radio show “Word Jazz” driving home from gigs.
