Here are five words or phrases you will want to avoid if you are interested in effectively communicating with others so that your words are heard! Don’t say “But.” When you use the word “but” people tense up. They anticipate a hidden agenda. And they rightly disregard everything that you said prior to “but.” Don’t say “should” or “ought.” These words place blame on others. They say, “You’re inadequate.” Don’t say, “You made me…” You know, “You made me angry…sick…misbehave.” This phrase is about faultfinding, shifting blame away from ourselves. Don’t say “always” or “never.” These are putdown words. They freeze people into negative permanent patterns from which they are unable to escape. And don’t say, “I can’t.” When you say, “I can’t,” people hear you saying, “I won’t” or “I refuse to try.” It causes people to see you as unwilling or rebellious.
